Seeing through the Label is more than just a book; what started as simply a piece of literature to share my own experiences, and different perspectives on mental health, has developed into the foundation of my practice.
For years I used journaling as a way to cope with past experiences and work through various thoughts in my head. It wasn’t until I was in my early twenties though, that I realized others may be able to benefit from my history.

Growing up with a mental health diagnosis I always felt alone and like there was no one else  who understood what I was going through - all I had was my journal. This led me to wanting to become a counsellor to help people who were in similar situations. As I entered my career I realized that by writing a book full of my own lived experiences including my journey through awareness, coping, and healing, I could impact people on a larger scale than if I were to simply work within my practice.

After releasing the book in 2014, I went on a cross-Canada road tour speaking at various venues from 10 people in a library to 200 people at a conference; the goal was to touch as many people as possible and create an open and honest discussion about mental health. I approached both the book and my tour as authentically as possible which involved toeing the line between staying true to my inner thoughts as well as my consistently positive attitude. This is a method I also bring into my practice while working with clients.

The title Seeing Through the Label came to fruition because during my journey I have realized that while labels are important - we have to name it to tame it - it’s equally as important to see through these labels we put on the pieces that make us; afterall, we are the sum of our parts.
